mEDI

How can mEDI help me determine if light is affecting the users’ health?

In 2022, a highly relevant scientific study was published that analyses the impact of exposure to ocular light on health and human well-being. This study emphasises that current light exposure patterns do not properly optimise our circadian functions, sleep, and neuroendocrine and cognitive functions.

What is mEDI?

The study refers to melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mEDI), an international standard that quantifies the influence of light on intrinsically photosensitive retinal neurons that express melanopsin. These neurons regulate our circadian rhythms, sleep, and neuroendocrine functions.

How mEDI works

  • Easy measurement: mEDI provides a simple and compatible framework with the International System of Units to inform the design of lighting.
  • Impact on the circadian system: calculates environmental light considering the melanopic sensitivity curve, with special attention to the blue part of the spectrum.
  • Improved lighting design: the study provides recommendations for lighting, based on an expert scientific consensus to adjust lighting to promote optimal physical and mental health and performance

The latest innovations in understanding these mechanisms and emerging technologies allow us to adjust our daily lighting to improve our general well-being.

This directly influences the Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) values and the brightness that the luminaires must provide, which can be regulated with the lighting control systems, so the mEDI can be regulated.

At KUMUX we have developed an algorithm based on the spectral analysis of thousands of LEDs, their CCT and their mEDI to extract a CCT/brightness relationship with mEDI and be able to transfer the scientific criteria to the control systems, taking into account the spectral characteristics of the luminaire. used. Knowing these relationships is essential to offer adequate lighting values that positively influence the synchronisation of circadian rhythms.

With these studies, we guarantee that the required illuminance values achieve a positive impact on people’s circadian rhythms and offer our clients higher quality and healthier lighting.
